Heatwave makes us buying large quantities of bottled water. Drinking water is good for our body, but is the bottled water really the best choice? Mizu- Japanese company draws attention to the environmental costs of such a solution. Every year, the world produces 50 billion plastic beverage bottles. In the USA, only 1 of 5 plastic bottles is recycled, the world ratio is even smaller, because 1 of 10 bottles is recovered. It means that every year 40 billion plastic bottles ends up in the oceans and landfills.
Each year, 17 million barrels of oil are used for the production of plastic bottles, it is just the amount burned out by a million cars in a year. To produce 1 plastic bottle of water, 3 bottles of water must be used! Water from the tap, according to the EWG.org, is tested 480 times per month with regard to various types of pollution. Meanwhile, bottled water is tested only once a week. Whats more - 40% of bottled water comes from the tap – as Mizu reports. Another argument that should be taken into account while selecting the water to drink, is BPA. It is a synthetic estrogen used as a binder in the production of most plastics. It makes the bottles strong and transparent. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has confirmed that BPA penetrates water in plastic containers and can cause a variety of health problems. Though many plastics manufacturers say that they do not use BPA in the production- there have been no studies to confirm it.
For all these reasons, Mizu decided to produce steel water bottles. Recycling steel and scrap metals market seems to be in a better condition than the one that deals with recycling plastic.
