Ortovox prepared for the next season some absolute blockbusters, that have been recognized at Europes biggest winter sports fair ISPO. First it is a must to present you a revolutionary solutions in the section backpacks with avalanche systems, but we did not forget about the classic backpacks and winter clothing.
The new era of avalanche airbag systems
640 grams light and 1.8 liters small. The revolutionary AVABAG avalanche airbag system is therefore the lightest and smallest airbag system in the world. This lightness was achieved thanks to innovative welding technology used to make the airbags, whereby the material is processed for the first time ever without sewing or additional waterproofing, and thanks to the drastically reduced venturi unit. This is a completely closed, robust system that functions without electricity and excludes dirt, ice and corrosion completely.
The mechanical AVABAG system is removable and compatible with all ORTOVOX AVABAG backpacks. Activation training and a release-optimized grip design are extremely important for an avalanche airbag system. Statistics show that 12 percent of all people involved in accidents while wearing an airbag do not manage to activate the system in the event of an avalanche.
The AVABAG system allows for unlimited practice tries without the cartridge attached, so that you can be well prepared for an emergency situation. The activation handle was another focus for development. It is ergonomically designed so that it can be activated easily with any type of glove and grip – regardless of whether you are right or left handed. The activation handle can be set at two different lengths and stands clearly away from the shoulder strap so as to make it easier to reach. On the lift the grip can be stored in the zipped compartment on the shoulder strap without compromising comfort.
While working on the AVABAG system, ORTOVOX also developed two lines of backpacks: the ski tour-oriented ascent series that offers three models and a backpack weight starting at 830 grams, and the free rider series with back protector to guarantee the best possible protection.
ASCENT – reduced to safety
The ASCENT series is a line of technical, ultra-light ski touring backpacks that are designed to match the simultaneously developed AVABAG system, in every detail. ORTOVOX offers three sizes from 22 to 30 liters, weighing a minimum of 830 grams (total weight including AVABAG system and cartridge: a lightweight 1780 grams). One reason for the low weight is the use of extremely light but abrasion-resistant materials such as Nylon 100D Robic Ripstop. Another reason was that, when developing this backpack, the focus was on reducing the design down to the essentials: safety and comfort. Despite its light weight, the foamed 3D back system is stable and distributes the weight evenly between the hip fins and the padded shoulder straps. A circular frontal zipper that provides quick access to your equipment, as well as features such as a diagonal ski attachment, an ice axe holder and rope fastening are all obligatory despite the light weight.
HAUTE ROUTE – the classic skittering backpacks
The HAUTE ROUTE has been completely redesigned for the 16/17 winter season. It is now much lighter and, thanks to the use of Cordura and double-layered Nylon 420D Manstar, even more resistant to abrasion. The O-Flex back system distributes the weight of the load evenly between the shoulders and hips, easing the burden of the muscles. The rear access to the main compartment and the comprehensive equipment package comprising crampon fastening, a fixed helmet net and rope fastening come as standard with the HAUTE ROUTE, which is also available in a smaller, 30-liter version with shorter back.
2L ANDERMATT JACKET – with black wool
In the 2L ANDERMATT JACKET, ORTOVOX combines wool from black swiss sheep with the highly-breathable TORAY DERMIZAX NX MEMBRANE. The result of this combination is a unique free riding jacket with an individual spirit. The strength of the wool filling varies between 120 g/m² for the body and a thinner 90 g/m² in the hood and sleeve areas, which means that each different body zone receives optimum support. The hood is dually adjustable for a great fit – underarm ventilation also allows for optimal climate regulation during an ascent. Lovingly added details such as teddy wool in the chin area give the 2L ANDERMATT JACKET a highly desirable freeride style.
